Three specialized renewable energy technician careers are Wind Turbine Technicians, Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Installers, and Weatherization Technicians.

Wind Turbine Technician

Wind Turbine Technicians install, maintain, and repair wind turbines. They maintain the physical integrity of the wind turbine by climbing wind turbine towers to inspect, diagnose, and repair turbine equipment and perform routine maintenance.

EXAMPLE SCENARIO

A wind turbine is experiencing issues generating the expected amount of power so a Wind Turbine Technician is hired to inspect and repair the issue. After safely climbing the tower, the Technician inspects the components, trouble-shoots the problem, and concludes that the gear box needs to be replaced and begins doing so.

TYPICAL TASKS SRC

  • Diagnose problems involving wind turbine generators or control systems.
  • Climb wind turbine towers to inspect, maintain, or repair equipment.
  • Test electrical components of wind systems with voltage testers, multimeters, oscilloscopes, infrared testers, or fiber optic equipment.
  • Start or restart wind turbine generator systems to ensure proper operations.
  • Troubleshoot or repair mechanical, hydraulic, or electrical malfunctions related to variable pitch systems, variable speed control systems, converter systems, or related components.

Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Installer/Technician

Solar PV Installers assemble, install, and maintain solar panel systems on rooftops and other structures. They assist in planning PV system configurations, analyze structure and site conditions, activate and test PV equipment and systems, and perform routine maintenance.

EXAMPLE SCENARIO

A Solar PV Installer is mounting solar panels onto a residential roof. After an electrician connects the panels to the electric grid, the PV Installer will check for proper wiring, polarity, and grounding, and will perform any maintenance on the system in the future.

TYPICAL TASKS SRC

  • Install photovoltaic (PV) systems in accordance with codes and standards, using drawings, schematics, and instructions.
  • Assemble solar modules, panels, or support structures, as specified.
  • Apply weather sealing to array, building, or support mechanisms.
  • Determine appropriate sizes, rating, and locations for all system overcurrent devices, disconnect devices, grounding equipment, and surge suppression equipment.
  • Identify methods for laying out, orienting, and mounting modules or arrays to ensure efficient installation, electrical configuration, or system maintenance.
